More than one possible cause

Neck pain can involve muscles and joints, and sometimes nerves. It may follow an injury or accompany a period of sustained work. Pain spreading into an arm, tingling or weakness changes what needs to be checked. Headaches can occur with neck symptoms, but not every headache begins in the neck.

What we assess

  • How it started: a gradual change, a sudden restriction or an accident.
  • What is affected: turning, looking up or down, sleep, work and activity.
  • Associated symptoms: headaches, arm symptoms, changes in strength, sensation or balance.
  • Your health and preferences: previous treatment, relevant conditions and any concerns about hands-on care.

The examination is guided by your history. Further medical review or investigation may be the appropriate next step.

What care may involve

For selected types of neck pain, clinical guidelines support a combination of exercise, advice and suitable manual therapy. Options may include gentle joint mobilisation, soft-tissue work and exercises for movement, strength or endurance. A particular technique is not suitable for everyone.

Discuss the expected benefits, possible risks and alternatives before treatment. You can ask about options that do not involve neck manipulation. The plan should take account of your examination and preferences.

How chiropractic care may help

The mechanical assessment considers neck and upper-back movement, muscle strength and endurance, and the demands of work, driving or other activities. For some neck conditions, manual therapy with exercise may improve function; pain relief varies and the evidence is uncertain.

Care may combine suitable hands-on techniques with movement practice, strengthening and changes to sustained tasks. The goal could be turning your head more comfortably or working with less difficulty. Posture advice helps you explore support and movement options without trying to hold your neck rigidly all day.

Make the advice fit your day

A desk, a driving position or a repeated task can be part of the conversation. Bring a description of the setup and what tends to bring on symptoms. The aim is to find manageable changes and an appropriate activity plan, with progress reviewed over time.

For uncomplicated neck pain, gentle movement can be helpful. Neck pain after an accident, or pain with neurological symptoms, needs assessment before following a general exercise routine.

Your questions.

Do I need an X-ray before booking?

No. Imaging is not needed for most people with neck pain. Your history and examination help determine whether it would be useful. Bring any relevant existing reports.

Can I discuss headaches or whiplash?

Yes. Explain the headache pattern or the accident and any associated symptoms. Different causes require different care. Assessment does not assume that every headache or post-accident symptom should be treated with manipulation.

Can I use a DVA referral or GP care plan?

Eligible DVA and GP care-plan patients are welcome, with no out-of-pocket fee for covered visits. A valid referral and available funded visits are required. See the funding information.
